Week 20 (February 23rd, 2006 )
Den Continued their run to the Premier division title this week with a 10-0 victory over Apollo A, Nick and Robert Hansell and John Cooper all taking three games each. Downley did not have as easy a ride in their match against the ladies side of Apollo B. Despite losing his first leg 0-11 skipper Chris Haines fought back in the next three legs to win 11-3 11-2 11-3 in the battle of the veterans against Dawn Pearce. Pearce was the only winner for the ladies beating Stuart Tweedy in three straight legs. This was not too much of a setback though as the team represented Wycombe League in the Pat Archdale trophy on Sunday and made it through to the National finals thanks to wins over Newbury and Maidenhead. Hazlemere A and Chalfont B had a tough match finish in a draw as Chalfont came from three down with three remaining. In one set Paul Curry and Peter Schmid battled out one of the longest legs of the season finally seeing Schmid take it 27-25.
In division one Julian Davies from Kingshill C was call into service for the A team and proved to be their top man in a 6-4 defeat to a battling Apollo E side. Eric Dutton scraped the last match against Los Harvey in the fourth to take the match. Apollo D shocked division leaders Broomwade A with a 5-5 draw. Des Morris was Apollo’s man of the match who won all his games uncontested in three legs. Andy Walsh another recruit from the lower divisions showed why he is at the top of the tables in division Two with a win and two losses in five legs against much higher class opposition than he is used to. He then had to turn his attention to division two as his team Apollo F took on Broomwade B. Finding themselves 4-1 up Apollo looked to be cruising to victory, but Jim Lewis guided his team to a 6-4 victory with a gutsy performance to inflict only the second loss of the season on Apollo.
